Why we prefer organic products and which chemicals commonly found in skincare products you should try to avoid.

Your skin is your bodys largest organ and absorbs 60% of anything put onto it. Organic products are made from natural ingredients and do not include any harsh chemicals which have been linked to health problems. As they are plant based they are especially high in Antioxidants which keep cells safe and healthy, whats more they are increadibly effective.

We're confident that once you have experienced our organic ranges you'll never want to return to chemically laden traditional products again. A lot of traditional products are marketed as being healthy and good for us but what the marketing companies aren't shouting about is that they often contain a number of ingredients that at best are questionable and worst life threatening. Here is a list of the worst ingredient offenders, we would urge you to do your own research and make your own mind up as to wether you want your family to be using products with these ingredients:

1) Parabens - These are petro-chemical based preservatives that have been linked with allergic reactions. Evidence shows that they are oestrogen (female hormone) mimics and one clinical study found evidence of parabens in tissue taken from a breast cancer patient. Whilst there is currently no respected medical evidence to confirm that parabens cause cancer, the findings are of great concern as it is widely accepted that oestrogen fuels the growth of Human breat tumours.

2)Petro-chemicals, paraffin & Mineral Oil - These are major environmental pollutents and are made from crude petrol. They are used as an emollient but ultimately suffocate the skin, preventing natural detoxing and being dangerouse if ingested. Worryingly they and are often found in baby products, skin body and hair care.

3) Synthetic Fragrances/parfum -These are chemical cocktails that can contain up to 100 different ingredients often petro chemical based. As they are frequently bound in alcohol they are drying and irritating to the skin. Unlike natural essential oils they are of no benefit to the body.

4) Sodium Lauryl/laureth Sulphate- This is a cheap foaming chemical found in shampoo, bubble bath, bodywash, hand soap and toothpaste as well as car washing detergents and industrial cleaners. It has been linked to eye and skin irritations and even worse to immune system damage, allergies, cataracts, impared hair growth and toxic build up in the lungs, liver and heart.

5) Propylene Glycol - Basically this is Anti-Freeze and is used in small amounts in cosmetics to make them soft and give them 'slip'.  It has been linked with kidney damage, dermatitis and depression.

6) Talc - Often considered to be very innocent as it is used in baby powder and many cosmetics, but is actually anything but, as it is  made from the mineral 'magnesium silicate' which in its raw form is often contaminated with asbestos.  If inhaled it is dangerous as it dries out the lungs and has been know to cause wheezing in infants and in some cases death.  More recently it has also been linked to cancer and possibly cervical.

7) Fluoride - Found mainly in toothpaste, it is poisonous if ingested and is actually used in rat poison.  It increases the absorption of aluminium into the body if ingested and suprisingly there is no conclusive medical proof that it actually prevents tooth decay.

8) DEA/TEA/MEA - Used as wetting agents in creams and shampoos.  These are amine compounds which can form cancer-causing nitrosamines linked with stomach liver and bladder cancer.

9) Aluminium - This is the ingredient found in anti-perspirants that stops the body from perspiring.  Whilst this initially may seem like a good idea it is worth noting that one of the bodies natural defenses against toxins is to release them through sweating, if you stop this process it can have very serious concequences.  Aluminium has been linked to cancer and also Alzheimer's disease.

10) Lanolin - This is the natural wax coating from sheeps wool, which on face value doesn't seem to alarming, but then when you consider that the majority of sheep are dipped in chemicals and most eat grass grown with chemical fertilizers which contaminate the lanolin it is a different story.  Lanolin like paraffin is used as an emollient but tends to suffocate the skin and clog the pores.

To conclude the best option is to research any ingredients that you don't understand and if in doubt - avoid it!!!
